Victor Popkov. 1932-1974. Moscow 13.12.13 - 26.01.14
Exhibition of Victor Popkov, one of the most vivid representatives of the so-called “austere style” of art has been opened in Moscow.
It is his first exhibition in the last 40 years. The retrospective exposition Victor Popkov. 1932-1974 has been arranged structurally rather than chronologically and unfolds the themes of major importance for Victor Popkov, namely life, death, and art.
His study in the Surikov Art Institute fell on the Thaw period. The beginning artist gained recognition with his student's work The Bratsk Hydroelectric Power Station painted after his assignment trip to Siberia. It was, by the way, acquired by the Tretyakov Gallery.
However, a few years later Popkov decided to overcome poster simplicity and achieve complexity, sophisticated implication. He attained it. Unfortunately, his tragic death prevented Victor Popkov from expressing his gift at full capacity. He was only 42 years old.
The retrospective of Victor Popkov is opened in the exhibition hall of the Russian Academy of Arts in Prechistenka Street in Moscow and will last till January 26, 2014. Afterwards the exposition will travel to Venice and then London.
